Holy Cross Ballroom Dance : Holy Cross Ballroom Competition : Rules & Guidelines
Competition Rules & Guidelines

  • Levels & Restrictions
    • Newcomer Category
      • In order to dance in newcomer category both members of a couple must have been dancing for less than a year (August 2007).
      • Newcomer couples are restricted to Pre-Bronze syllabus for International style and Bronze syllabus for American style. Newcomer couples dancing American style are encouraged to dance basic patterns and dance them well!
    • Which level can I dance?
      • There is NO time limit for bronze category. However, if a couple has placed in final rounds at any collegiate competitions in the past they are encouraged to dance silver.
      • All couples dancing in syllabus events (Bronze, Silver or Gold) must dance at their level as determined by YCN/NECN point systems.
      • Partners at different levels dancing together must dance at the level of the more experienced partner.
      • Dancing down a level is expressly NOT ALLOWED.
      • Each competitor may register up to four category-level blocks. Each block consists of the dances in one category (standard, latin, smooth, or rhythm) at one level (newcomer, bronze, silver, gold, or open).
      • Dancers may only dance in adjacent levels in multiple styles (i.e. you may dance Gold Smooth and Silver Latin but not Gold Rhythm and Bronze Standard).
      • A competitor may only dance at one level per style.
        Exceptions:
        • Unless a specific dance is not offered at their level.
        • Gold couples are allowed to dance open as well.
        For example:
A couple that dances Bronze American Rhythm but also wishes to dance Mambo, may compete in Silver Mambo.
      • A competitor may dance at two adjacent levels in two different styles.
        For example:
A couple is allowed to dance Bronze Smooth and Standard but Silver Rhythm and Latin
A couple is allowed to dance Gold Latin and Standard but Open Rhythm and Smooth
A couple may NOT dance both Open Latin and Beginner Smooth.
      • A competitor may dance at two adjacent levels in two different roles.
        For example:
A dancer may follow in Silver Smooth and lead in Bronze Smooth.
A dancer may follow in Silver Smooth, rhythm, latin and standard.
A dancer may follow in Silver smooth and silver rhythm, and lead in Bronze latin and Bronze Standard.
A dancer may NOT follow in Silver Smooth, rhythm, latin and standard and lead in Bronze smooth, rhythm, latin and standard. (This would violate the four category-level blocks rule, see above.)
